Bed rails question

I know there have been similar posts on this topic, but my question is slightly different. So, I bought the Safety 1st bed rails that everyone suggested in another thread. However, they keep popping up even though they're in the lock position. I also don't like how I feel trapped in the bed because it's hard to put the rail down when you're in bed. My question is do you think it's safe to use cheaper bed rails? The kind that don't sit on top of the mattress. My baby is 5 months old. Oh, I should add that before the rails we used an Arms Reach cosleeper as a safety net, but I want to pack it up because lo doesn't sleep in it and my bedroom is small enough. TIA!
