Ok to ask previous family how much they paid the nanny?

Hi there,

We just phone interviewed a nanny based on the recommendation of another family (we don't know the other family, but they gave us a recommendation on our local neighborhood list-serve) and really like her.

Just wondering what the etiquette was here and if it was appropriate to ask the previous family (the one that is providing a reference for her) how much they paid her.  Is this acceptable?
