Tips/Advice on taking 10 months old on public transport

So DS will be starting daycare in a few weeks.  DH and I will be taking him on a bus/train/subway every day since his daycare center is in my office building.  It's about a 15 minute bus ride followed by a 20 minute train ride, then a 7 minute walk.  We will definitely be able to find a seat going in the morning, but coming back in the afternoon will be very crowded.  We are planning to buy a light-weight stroller (thinking about the Uppababy GX) and I plan on taking some board books to read to him while we are in transit.  Maybe a toy or two too?  I don't really know what to expect since I don't often see children that young on public transit in my area.

I'm thinking I might try to get him to eat on the train too - simple things like bananas, yogurt, etc., since we'd have to leave the house at 7:15 a.m. and his daycare doesn't serve breakfast until 9.  If he doesn't eat on the bus/train, that means we'd have to get up even earlier.

Any advice/tips would be much appreciated!
