overwhelmed about baby gear!

So I was on the 2nd trimester board reading a post about crib bumpers (already placed my order on etsy for NON bumper bedding BTW) when someone posted links to this website that told of a couple of children killed by suffocation by crib bumpers.  So I check out the site, and not only are there stories about bumpers, but about bassinettes, high chairs, strollers, pack n plays, etc. 

I need a paper bag to breathe into now.

What are your resources for baby gear safety?  I figured if its being sold in stores, it should meet safety guidelines, but ALL those things on that website were sold in stores at one point, right?

My mom has already bought me a bassinette... Its currently at her house but now I am concerned the fabric isn't breathable.  And now I am worried about how we will travel with those stories about portable cribs and play yards. 

Is there a list somewhere with safety ratings or a list of items in these categories that are deemed safe?  Any other tips to get me to calm the hell down?
