Baby Showers

So my MIL wants to throw me a shower and it seems like my mom wants to as well.  The interesting thing is that we all live in the same town and they are both attending each other's shower.   I am in my final semester of getting my MSW and the students I am graduating with want to throw me a shower on the last day of class and they have asked me to let them know if I want specific items or just money or gift cards.  I am going to set up a registry I guess but what I've always wanted to do was have people donate money to a local charity for families who are affected by cancer because my husband has mesothelioma.  I think asking people to donate might offend them and I am wondering what your thoughts are?
