Breast Feeding???

This is my 1st baby & I really want to try breast feeding while I'm at home on maternity leave. I'm thinking of doing it for the 1st 6 weeks and then start weaning from it my last 2 weeks at home, as anyone done this before? I really don't know what to expect from it all, no one in my family has done breast feeding.

So basically if there is anyone out there who has breastfed can let me know what to expect and also if since I'm only doing it for a short amount of time will I need to invest in all the equipment, like pumps. Thanks so much if your able to answer.
