Display Shower

I'm throwing a shower for my SIL and was trying to be nice by including her MIL who desperately wanted to throw the shower, but SIL didn't want her to.  At their request we're actually doing a Baby-Q which essentially is a co-ed BBQ shower.  Because SIL and BIL don't want to open gifts at the Baby-Q, MIL would like them to do a "display shower" which apparently means you don't have people wrap the gifts and you display them somewhere in the open so everyone can still see what you got.

I've never been to a shower where this was done before so I wanted to see what you ladies thought.  She said it's common among people who are trying to be "green" and don't want people to use wrapping paper.  That's not the case here (MIL just wants to see all the goods), but thought I'd see what other people's experiences/opinions were.
