Registering - How to hold new dad back?

This is our first baby and I am anticipating a huge problem with my boyfriend when we go to register.  I am the one who will do 99% of the research and will probably have a list of what I want before we even enter the stores.  I want to keep it simple and only put down things we really need, knowing we'll probably get lots of fluffy, frivolous things (that I don't want) anyway.  He's already talking about buying a car with third row seating so we can transport all of our child's soccer friends.  Get the difference between us?

I've voiced my concern to DB that we will be fighting in the store unless he starts doing some research too.  I told him which websites were helpful and showed him my copy of Baby Bargains hoping he would start reading it.  He brushed it off saying he'll try to keep himself in check but that I would have to give him some leeway.  Short of tackling him and wrestling the gun away from him, what else can I do to keep him from scanning everything with a barcode?
