S/O leaving kids in the car

I have a legitimate question. I have never left my child in the car without another adult. But I do have a real question if you have an attached garage and it is heated/cooled accordingly and your LO fell asleep in the car if you left the door open and stayed within earshot would you feel safe and/or is that legal to leave them in the car in that situation?

We don't even have an unattached garage so I obviously haven't done this but I have thought it would be nice to do if I had an attached garage on those days that the only way she will nap is in the car. 

I am legitimately asking because I really don't know if it legal or if I would do it if I actually had a garage. Obviously I know you couldn't leave the car running because of fumes.
