why the stripes

Browsing for maternity clothes and I am baffled by how many striped tops there are as options! I get that it is a trend now but really, when did horizontals become a must-have for wardrobes? I'm curvy enough as it is - and only more so now that I'm expecting - stripes are starting to look more like a thumbprint these days!
