Prefolds and inserts?

So I'm getting my stash ready for LO, and have a few questions I cant seem to find the answers to. I want to get as much use out of my diapers as possible and I'm hoping to be able to use a one size prefold with every stage of my covers. Is this possible? What size should I get to be universal? Also, I have bamboo inserts that came with my pocket diapers and I'm curious, can I use those in a cover in place of a prefold? Is there a size restriction on that too?
