pack n' play w/bassinet

H & I are might be buying this pack n play similar to the photo. Ok, so stupid question.... if you have used these before, is it safe to have a newborn sleep in the bassinet part of it? is it also safe for them to sleep on the mattress with it raised like that (like, the part in the middle of the actual playpen)
