Midwives v. OBs?

I am just curious, why are some of you seeing a midwife v. an OB? There are midwives at my doctor's practice and I recall being assigned to one in the past. This time I wasn't even given that option, but that may be because of my history of early pregnancy losses. Anyway, I'm not complaining since I love the OBs at the practice I go to, just curious.
