How much is safe?

My Dr gave me a list of medications I can safely take to help me sleep at night. (Benadryl, Unisom, Tylenol PM and Melatonin) The one that I feel safest using is Melatonin. Of course it is on the list from the Dr, but the bottle says it is not recommended. I called my Dr and they said it is safe but wouldnt/couldnt give me a dosage. She said if it is safe, then the dosage doesnt matter. This doesnt make sense to me. Tylenol is safe, but there are limits, ya know?
