cramping for 2 weeks before period?

This all started last month.. Trust me, I was panicing something was wrong. I've been getting my period about evey 45-55 days (still EBF).  Last month, about 3 weeks before I THOUGHT I was going to get a period, I started getting "period cramps".  Well. this went on, and on, and on... FINALLY I got it.  I called the doctor because I was concerned about this, and she said basically my uterin lining is starting, and building.. and buiding.. but just VERY slowly because im breasfeeding.  Hence the LONG time of cramps pre-period. 

Well here we are, 2 weeks before I THINK im getting a period, and Im cramping like crazy. Has anyone else experienced this? They are painful enough that I need a heating pad of ibuprohpen..
