6 month old...am I feeding to often?

DS is 6 months old and is still currently nursing every two hours during the day and every three hours throughout the night.  I feed him on demand, so whenever he shows he is hungry.  The pedi said at his 4 month appointment he should be able to go 6 hours at night but he sleeps in our bed and I don't want to do any form of CIO at this point so I just feed him.  At least during the day though, shouldn't he be able to be stretching out his feedings a little by this point?    He eats at the same frequency now as he did when he first was born.  With DD I ep'd so I know it was different and am wondering if this is normal for a nursing baby?
