Do I really need this?

I had a bassinet for DS but never actually used it because he hated it and would never sleep without my hand touching him. We ended up co-sleeping for two months, but I had a CA King bed to myself back then. Now, not so much, and I don't want to co-sleep if I can help it.

We do have a wooden cradle that's gorgeous that will be on my side of the bed. I found sheets that will fit the pad, but it recommends to also buy the quilted sheet that goes under the regular sheet. Is that really necessary? I thought I had read somewhere that baby's mattress and/or pad should be as firm as possible.
