Timing and duration

My little girl is now 6 days old and eating had been a struggle. At the hospital she was only earring every 5 hours and even then would fall asleep almost immediately. The nurse said that we had to make sure for the first month that we wake her and make her stay awake to eat every 23 hours or she won't be able to grow properly. Well, the party two nights we had a heck of a time with feeding that normally included anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes of screaming before eating. So we decided last night to just let her go until she started to wake up. She is only eating every 3.5 hours but eats for about 35 minutes this is ALL eating time, not including burping or switching sides. The experience was much more pleasant with a lot less screaming. Is this okay to have feedings so far spaced apart?
