Paying for delivery prior to having baby.

Hey all! I had my first appointment a couple weeks ago, and today got a letter in the mail breaking down how much I'd owe for delivery based on my insurance. They expect this amount to be paid 2 months prior to delivery. I had my first two children at a different practice/hospital, so this is new to me. They also said they expect the first payment to be made at my next appointment. Anyone else's doctor operate this way?

It seems a bit odd to me, paying for a service before you actually receive it. Plus, my son has a medical condition which will cause us to almost definitely hit our our of pocket maximum by June, easily, which means our insurance would actually end up covering the entire delivery.
