FTM still a bit confused on how to dress baby

So I'm putting together my hospital bag and am trying to think of what he will wear home. We're pretty practical so I'm not gonna have him in some cute little six piece outfit, I'm thinking a zip up footsie thing,swaddled and a hat. BUT do you put a onsie under those footsie one piece outfits? (It'll be mid February and cold here in the mountains of NC)
