Anyone have experience with freelance writing?

I am looking for ways to supplement my income. I am a teacher with 7 years experience and am currently teaching prek. I was on the website for one of my favorite educational publications and saw that they were looking for applicants to do freelance work designing units. I have no idea what this would pay per assignment but am interested in applying as I tend to have lots of good ideas that I get compliments on a lot. Can anyone give me even the vaguest idea as to what I could expect as far as pay? Thanks!
