Episiotomy or not?

Last night my sister (who is a nurse) told me I was crazy if I let the Doctor do an episiotomy during the birth of my son.  I was a little confused by this...since I assumed that this option is way safer then letting myself tear.  She told me that I should NOT get one....that a natural tear is better.

I guess I was under the impression that a controlled cut (made in a safe location by the doctor) was safer then an 'uncontrolled' tear that could affect me in different ways.

What do you guys think?
