When to pump? How?

Hi,

I need some advice about when to pump.  Yesterday was kind of a disaster because my LO was left hungry because I expressed/pumped 1oz right before she ate.  She woke up early and surprised me.  It snowballed into her being hungry and mad all afternoon.  I read you should pump in the mornings because that is when your prolactin levels are highest and you produce the most BM.  Should I maybe just pump one side?  I need to make a backup supply for returning to work.  I'm a flight attendant and need quite a bit as i'm gone 3 days at a time.
