Internal exam cause contractions?

So I'm 36 weeks and some change and had my first internal exam today. It definitely was uncomfortable and I felt a little sore right after but nothing too bad. Now about 5 hours later I am having a TON of cramping and I think real contractions. Very tight painful feeling across my entire stomach that kind of stops me in my tracks.. happening for about 6 mins on average but only last 30-45 secs. I've tried relaxing, walking around, drinking water but they're not going away at least yet.

Is this happening because of the internal exam? This couldn't be real labor could it?

I guess I should also mention that I was thinned and starting to efface but not yet dilated at the exam.
