Any tips for reducing gentian violet staining?

I have tried everything to get rid of this dang thrush, but after three rounds of diflucan, I have given up.  So today I got gentian violet, and despite my best efforts, DS thrashed all around while I tried to feed him and it got all over his face.  I mean everywhere.  On his nose, on his cheeks, his lips, his chin, everywhere except his forehead.  Any tips on reducing the staining?  I don't think I can do this again tomorrow (or ever) because I'm so upset about the stains on his face.  I want to cry.
