measuring 6weeks and no heartbeat

i just had my first ultrasound on monday, my birthday, and i knew something was wrong the second the us tech asked if i was sure about the date of my last period.  she said our baby was only measuring 6 weeks 0 days instead of 8 weeks according to my last period AND she could not detect a heartbeat.  my doctor said he didn't want to give me false hope but did want to wait a week and repeat the ultrasound because my periods are not on a regular 28 day cycle.  i'm so devastated : (   by far this has been the worst birthday ever.
