Biting

Apologies if this gets asked often but I didn't see anything about 4 pages back.
I've read the articles on the LLL website and kellymom. The problem is he bites me when he's comfort nursing and having trouble falling asleep. It's like he gets bored or frustrated with sucking and decides to try something else. It may also correspond to teething, because it doesn't happen all the time.
When he bites me I involuntarily exclaim OW! And he pops off. I lay him down in the crib or sit him on the floor immediately and don't nurse him right away when I pick him back up, but he always fusses for it after a minute. I feel like surprising him and ending the nursing session is not getting the message to him.
Since he's comfort nursing I can't really tell when his latch changes and anticipate the bite. And right now I really have no other way of getting him to sleep. If I hand him off to DH he just screams for me.
Any suggestions?? My nipples hurt and I'm tense while we're nursing. :[
