Anyone SEE the heartbeat but not hear it/know the rate yet?

I went for my first appointment and the doctor did a vaginal ultrasound to confirm how far along I was. We saw the flicker of the heartbeat but the doctor didn't try to hear it or look at the rate. At the time I didn't think anything of it, but all over this board I see people who are at 6 weeks like me, who have the baby's heart rate.

Is it normal that my doctor didn't check this on my first appointment? I go back December 17 when I'll be 10 weeks. I'm hoping I can find out the heart rate then!
