How? I don't get it... side lying

What am I missing? Everyone makes it sound like it's supposed to be the easiest thing in the world and you do it so naturally in the middle of the night. I need both my hands while nursing one to hold/guide his head and one to hold my boob until he latches.

So can someone please give me step by step directions on how this is supposed to work? Or is he too young/we too new at this for this position to work?
