I clearly don't understand unions very well

Unions aren't really big where I live. I mean, certain industries have them but it isn't like it is in some other states where unions are a big thing.

This Hostess thing...didn't this union just strike themselves out of a job? How is that going to be better? Wouldn't it have been better to reach a compromise? I can't imagine that these people are going to have an easy time finding new jobs...
