Simple question re: Pack and Play

Okay, I have a simple, probably dumb question about pack and plays.  My LO has been in her crib since day one and we've never used a pack and play.  We're flying back to the US for Christmas, staying for one week.  My dad is stocking up on baby gear and we (obviously) need somewhere safe and comfy for LO to sleep.  

Can she sleep on the bottom/play yard area of the pack and play?  In all of the pictures and descriptions on Amazon the baby is shown sleeping in the bassinet portion, and standing or playing at the lower level.  From what I've read, LO will be too heavy for the bassinet as she's already over 14 pounds.  

If she can sleep on the lower level, does a mattress come with most Graco models, or do we buy that separately?
