How long do you wait?

How long do you wait to go to little one when they wake up at night? Do you go in immediately after the first peep? Or do you let them fuss and only go in if they start crying? Do you wait a certain amount of time even if they start crying? DS goes zero to sixty in 2.5 seconds at night. So there is no fussing or talking. But sometimes it's like he is still basically asleep. It isn't till I get him that he stops crying and wakes up. I never wait, I go in immediately.
