odd question about brown discharge

ok forgive me for being a little dumb. but this is all new for me and I never had brown discharge...until last month....My husband and I had only been trying for 2 months. September period was normal but October was not. I was late so i took a HPT and it was negative. Then a few days later when i wiped i noticed the brownish discharge color.  I didn't think much of it then since i have PCOS and thought it was just my period being weird since i stopped taking the pill.  I told myself that it was my period.

This month i didnt get my period at all and thats when i got the Positive HPT (bloodwork from doctor also confirmed positive)  

So heres my question....can brown discharge happen when your not pregnant or could i be farther along then I think? (my doctors appointment  isn't until 12/5)
