birth control while BF

I am on the birth control that can be taken while BF...before I started it, I still had not yet had a period since before pregnancy but heard that BF can keep it away longer. I assumed once I was back on a pill it would regulate again but I am starting my 3rd month and still have not had a period. Cramping but thats it...just wondered if anyone knows if this is common with continued BF or if I should be asking my doc about it.?
