strange question

so i've seen a few things in the recent days after the Sandy hit about mothers donating breast milk to those who my have lost their supply. Never heard of this being done, is it safe/healthy? ive read a lot about not sharing breast pumps, so one would think you shouldn't share breast milk. Just a bit shocked, and could use some info/opinions from those who are more experienced than I.
