Bruised feeling

My DS is just over a week old.  He eats about every 2 hrs and nurses for about 30 min. each time.  My nipples feel bruised when he latches on, it seems to go away after he has been on for about a minute or so.  Is this normal?  I can't remember feeling like this the first time around.  If this is normal is there anyway to relieve the pain a little? It seems to be getting worse each day, or is this something I just need to power through and it will get better with time?  TIA.
