Question about 'self weaning'...

Hi, 

I've heard of this from a few people now and have seen it mentioned on here, but I don't fully understand it. When people say that their LO self weaned from the breast does that mean they had previously been fed with a bottle and therefore began to prefer the bottle over the breast? Or alternatively, is it ONLY possible for a LO to 'self wean' if they've previously been offered milk in bottles?
