Latching issues

At what point should LO have a good grasp on breastfeeding?  My DD is going on 6 weeks old and we are still having a lot of issues with BF.  She refuses to open her mouth very wide so it is hard to get her on very well.  Also, she is making a clicking noise a lot when she nurses.  I always stop her and try to re-latch. It usually takes about 6 or so tries to finally get her latched without clicking.  Even then she doesn't have a very deep latch.  My left nipple is still very sore from all of this.  I am started to feel a little defeated because to me it feels like we should have gotten the hang of this by now.  I am wondering if it would be better for her if I would pump and bottle feed.  She is having a lot of issues with gas and I am afraid that nursing is the cause.  She burps a lot but still has a ton of gas too.
