Breastfeeding

Legality of NIP

There was a discussion on a friend's Facebook page about NIP. She posted how upset she was that a friend of hers was made uncomfortable by being asked by the owner of a local business to use a cover. Several people quoted state law, which says "A mother may breastfeed in any place she has a right to be."

Another person said that even with the law in place, that a person could still be asked to leave under the business's right to refuse service to anyone for any reason except for a protected civil right e.g. they can't kick you out because of your race. Once they ask you to leave, you no longer have the right to be there and would be considered trespassing. Basically, a business could simply ask you to leave without giving a reason and would be within their legal right to do so.

Is this true? If so, is the only protection of the law to not be arrested for indecent exposure? That's terribly disappointing if it is true.

ETA: Just to clarify, this woman did not get kicked out. She had an uncomfortable conversation with the owner, but continued to nurse. The point about businesses refusing service was just brought up in the Facebook discussion.
