Weaning Help

My son is almost 2 1/2, he loves to nurse, like 5-6 times a day. If he doesn't get to nurse when he asks, he kicks, screams, hits, pulls at my shirt, ETC. I've tried everything I can think of to get him to at least cut back to 3 times a day, morning, nap, and bedtime, but nothing is working. I even left him on two different occasions for a week, and he went right back to nursing when I got home. I used to love our nursing relationship, now I feel myself starting to resent him for not letting me have my boobs back. Not to mention, my nipples are super sore from pregnancy, so it's painful. How did you wean your toddler?
