cough meds we can safely take?

I've had a cold/cough for over a week now and it's hell. I'm okay during the day, but as soon as I get into bed (and am prone) I start to cough to the point where I have to get up. It's such a bad hack, it's impossible to lay down and leaves me feeling weak.

 I'm still trudging in to work and have zero time to get to a doctor. Is there any cough medicine that I can take that is safe? Our pharmasict suggested a kids one (Dessalyn I think), but it seems to do nothing for me. I'm so exhausted- almost started to cry on the car ride in this monring. Help.
