How long can your LO stay awake and pleasant?

LO is now 11 weeks old.  He has never, ever been a good napper.  I have tried everything.  Is an hour or an hour and a half still as long as LOs should be awake or has it gotten a little longer?  I still see signs of sleepiness after about an hour, but will sometimes work for an hour to get him asleep and get him to take a 20 minute nap.  So, I am wondering if he should be up for a longer period of time.  

He has been awake for 4 hours and is now finally asleep after many attempts to put him down.  I am really hoping he stays down for an hour.  I know you aren't supposed to let your baby get too overtired, but he just refuses to nap.  So, how long do you wait to until you try to get LO down at this point?  I guess I am wondering if I am expecting too much.  

Oh, and letting him fall asleep in his swing, chair etc. is impossible.  He would be up from 7am-7pm.
