Twisting/pinching when unlatching

DS is 5 months old and has a new trick ... when he is ready to unlatch he twists his head to the side and gums my nipple HARD! It hurts ... has anyone else experienced this? And tips on how I can get him to stop? Or should I just unlatch him with my finger when I think the feeding is done? I've always let him take the lead on when a feeding is over, except when I was switch nursing for a period of time.
