Labial Adhesions in Newborn Baby girls

We went for our 2 month check up yesterday and the Dr. mentioned to keep an eye out for labial adhesions.  I never heard of this and was directed to put Vasaline to help avoid it.  Has anyone else been told about this?  It seems really scary and painful!
