Angelcare Question

With all the scares I have been reading lately, I am good and freaked out, so I went ahead and ordered my Angelcare yesterday. I do have a question for those who have one. I read multiple reviews on Amazon mentioning placing plywood under the mattress, have you done this? I guess it's making me confused on how exactly this monitor works. Didn't stop me from buying it though.
