How long does it take to put LO to sleep?

I'm finding that at night, it takes usually 1-2 hours to get her to fall asleep. I usually nurse her till she konks out but my pedi mentioned we might want to start "teaching" her to fall asleep on her own. I'm assuming this would be like putting her in her bed and walking away?

Nap time I usually hold her/nurse and rock her to sleep as well. That is, if she's down with taking a nap, which she usually isn't.

It just seems like 1-2 hours is excessive? Mostly because by the time she goes down, I'm ready to crawl into bed as well, so I'm not getting any time "away" from her to get things done in the evening.

Any tips/tricks I can try to teach her to fall asleep on her own? TIA!
