Gender announcement parties

Apparently the latest thing is for the couple to have a gender announcement party where everyone finds out what they are having- INCLUDING THE PARENTS TO BE! The doctor gives them the sex of the baby in a sealed envelope and at the party they cut into a plain yellow cake and the inside will reveal the sex (pink or blue)!  This is a cute idea wanted to share with you.

I'd love to do this, but my friends/family are all mostly 3000 miles away.  In about 4 different states.  Boo.  Anyone in the same boat?  How does this work when it comes to baby showers?
