Pre-Schools on Eastside

I have heard several rumors that we should start planning on getting on "the list" of the top pre-schools in Seattle. I would like to start that process now, and we live on the eastside (Kirkland) but am not sure where to start. What are these "top notch schools" and are they just glorified daycares? What about Montisori's versus preschools?
