Newborn Photos

We are having a photographer come to our home for newborn photos after our little guy arrives. Everything we've seen from her looks great and we're really excited to work with her. She requires full payment (which is not cheap) in order to book the dates. Is this normal protocol? Just seems like a lot of money to give her before she even does anything. Looking for advice from some of you who may have more experience with professional photographers as I don't deal with them often.
