Hair Dying

My hair dresser had told me a while back that the chemicals they use in the dye aren't as harsh as they were years ago and that if women can work in a hair salon throughout their pregnancy that I was fine to dye my hair when I got pregnant.  Opinion here?  Anyone know if there is a difference between highlighting (bc it's stripping your hair) and going darker?  Thanks in advance!
